Colorado balcony solar FAQ

Short answers. Full statute notes live on the HB26-1007 page.

Is balcony / plug-in solar legal in Colorado?

Qualifying portable-scale devices are covered by HB26-1007 (up to 1,920 W, NRTL listed, anti-islanding). See the law page.

What changes on January 1, 2027?

Unreasonable HOA/covenant bans become void; devices over 391 W sold in Colorado must be UL labeled; the device is treated as an energy efficiency measure under CCIOA.

I’m on Xcel in Denver. Do I need approval?

The statute says retail providers may not require approval or a device fee. They may require notice with size in kW. Ask Xcel how to file that notice.

Is there a Colorado rebate just for plug-in kits?

We did not verify a statewide plug-in-specific rebate. Colorado does exempt certain renewable components from state sales tax (DOR SUTT). The federal 25D credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 per the IRS.

Will I get net metering?

Colorado co-ops that published guidance (YVEA, LPEA) say plug-in devices in this class are not net metered. Expect daytime offset only unless your utility says otherwise.

Which kit should I buy?

Start with the Colorado kit comparison and stay under 1,920 W.
