Fort Collins plug-in and balcony solar
Fort Collins balcony solar under HB26-1007 for city utility customers and HOA residents.
Statewide rules come from HB26-1007. City pages add local context only where we can source it. Not legal advice.
What HB26-1007 means in Fort Collins
- Qualifying portable-scale kits up to 1,920 W to the grid.
- Your electric provider cannot require approval or a device fee; it may require notice with size in kW.
- From January 1, 2027, unreasonable HOA bans are void; reasonable securing and safety rules may remain.
Utility notes
Fort Collins operates a municipal electric utility (Fort Collins Utilities) for much of the city. HB26-1007 still limits what any retail provider can demand for qualifying portable-scale devices. Ask Fort Collins Utilities for their notification process; we did not locate a plug-in-specific FAQ on 2026-11-05.
Local context
Northern Front Range sun is still strong enough that a south-facing balcony can offset daytime loads. Match kit size to midday use, not to wishful export credit. Portable-scale devices are generally outside classic net metering under the co-op pages we reviewed (YVEA, LPEA); expect the same pattern unless your municipal utility says otherwise in writing.
Sun estimate for your address
Run PVWatts with your Fort Collins street address for a preliminary production estimate. The calculator is maintained by the National Laboratory of the Rockies.
Next steps
